Apologies and the Legacy of AbuseBrennan, C., “Trails and contestations: Who speaks and at what cost?’‘, in J. Skold & S. Swain (eds), Apologies and the Legacy of Abuse of Children in ‘Care’: International Perspectives (Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), 55-69. ISBN: 978-1-137-45754-7.

Dr Carol Brennan, of the Law School, has contributed a chapter to this international collection. It covers inquiries into the historical abuse of children in care over the last 20 years. It draws on the experience of care-leaver advocates, historians, archivists, museum professionals, social workers, lawyers and psychologists who have been involved in the investigation and redress processes in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

Dr Brennan’s chapter, “Trails and contestations: Who speaks and at what cost?”, focuses on Ireland’s “Ryan Report” of 2009, and was also the topic of a paper she gave at the conference “Dialogues on Historical Memory and Justice” at the University of Lund in Sweden in December 2014.
